keeps opening the English version when I want the Danish

I have contributed to them my first transcription from the Danish Census of 1860

Now i wanted to do an extraction of the historic housing estate where I lived BRUMLEBY in Copenhagen

But I got given the whole darn quarter which will be 20 or 30 thousand names in scraggly quill penned gotisk hand writing.

Luckily I know the sreets "like my trouser pockets" as the Danes say having driven the taxi in every one of them over the last fifteen years - so the job is really exciting.

And some famous people lived there - already a Countess has shown up :-)

I estimate 2 or 3 years at a gentle pace.

BTW it was called KJØBENHAVEN

København or Kjøbenhavn and other forms of the name.

In the "officielle retsskrivning" or rules for correct spelling for schools and civil servants made in 1896, and up to 1938 either spelling was permitted.

"Borgerrepræsentationens Forhandlinger" the town council committee 1902/03 introduced the modern spelling in 1903/04, but "Københavns Budget" the finance committee changed it in 1907/08 and by 1938 "Kjøbenhavn" had disappeared in the City Hall.


The Ministries and Civil Servants dropped the "j" in 1929 but "Stednavneudvalget" the Place Names Committee used it until 1932
and in Kraks vejviser, (the street guide like Kelly's in UK) used both until 1933.
