Anyway born in 1936 in Sutton Coldfield and growing up in the Midlands when steam engines were still (just) commercially viable, meant that I had a natural love of steam and coal.
But when in 1954- 1955 I learned about thermodynamics and the relative indicated thermal efficiency of the reciprocating engines at Loughborough CAT (now the university) so seing no future in steam locomotives, I dropped mechanical engineering in favour of civil engineering, and I thought that at least I could work with the infrastucture of railways, and may be a spaceport in Australia in the 1980ies, but fate enabled me to become a professional musician.

Steam Balloon Article: "The steam balloon appears to be an extremely viable proposition; and while the steam airship does not have the potential to displace the helium airship in every application, it appears that it may well find a rewarding niche, perhaps in sports or low operating cost roles. And a steam engine is certainly a competitive alternative to the use of an 'explosion engine' for powering a steam airship. The writer is a little surprised that these concepts have never before been seriously advanced. "
