You said that as an ancestry subscriber you pay for genweb too? USGenWeb is free...it's ran completely by volunteers who offer it up to everyone for free.
As for evidence on the other, just do a google search you'll find it all over the place
of course the content is free
but who pays for the server and band width all on rootsweb
