Great Crimean War Index.
A lecture by Brian Oldham (£5/£4)

This research index assists family and military historians wishing to trace
the history of officers and soldiers of the British Army who took part in
the Crimean War. It has been compiled from the Medal Rolls and Pay List and
Muster Rolls of this period. It contains the names of all the men who went
out to the war irrespective of whether they actually received a medal. Some
20,000 of these men died in the Crimea, Bulgaria, Turkey or en route. They
have no death certificate and, in most cases, no monumental inscription.

Saturday 11 December, 10.30 am - 5 pm.
Advanced Palaeography
A full-day course with Hilary Marshall (£25/£20)

The study day (comprised of four sessions) will focus on the reading of
English and Latin documents of a kind used by family historians. The
advanced day is intended to enable participants to cope with the intricacies
and vagaries of palaeographical problems, including those relating to the
deciphering of the abbreviated medieval Latin found in many records up to
the 1730s. The course will be of a practical nature and centred on reading
from photocopies of examples of the above type of documents. The advanced
course is intended for those who have some experience of interpreting old
documents but who wish to develop their skills. Some basic experience of
Latin, however rusty, would be of help.
