Somerset Online Parish Clerks

Somerset Online Parish Clerks: "We are growing with 139 of 620 parishes and villages now covered!

Somerset is a county in the south-west of England. Bordered by the counties of Bristol and Gloucestershire to the north, Wiltshire to the east, Dorset to the south-east, and Devon to the south-west; the county is also partly bounded to the north and west by the coast of the Bristol Channel.

In order to promote further private research, information is made FREELY available to any researcher. This will include census returns, Church register transcripts, bishop's transcripts, churchwardens accounts, overseers accounts, land tax records, postal directory extracts, church and village histories, in fact anything our volunteers can find which other researchers may find interesting. The OPC scheme encourages people to make transcriptions available on this website, but this is not a pre-requisite to being an OPC. Offering a look up service is an alternative approach as is publishing the information on an OPC's own website or elsewhere. It takes time to transcribe and accumulate material, an OPC may not yet have full data for all these sources.

An OPC is a volunteer and should not be confused with the civil Parish Clerk appointed by a Parish Council. An Online Parish Clerk (OPC) researches all the available historical data they can find on a parish, and transcribes records. They may also offer a look up service in response to an email or postal request.

Ulster Heritage Magazine

Ulster Heritage Magazine: "Thus there is no evidence in the archaeological record for any population movement from Ireland to Scotland, other than travel by occasional individuals. In Anglo-Saxon England we have an archaeologically invisible native British population, and debate centres on the extent to which they adopted the cultural package of Anglo-Saxons. In Argyll in contrast, it is the Goidelic invaders who are archaeologically invisible."

England and Wales 1911 Census website

Welcome to the official 1911 Census website: "The 1911 census service will be launching soon and when it is available you will be able to search over 36 million records of people living in England and Wales in 1911."

1911census.co.uk blog: "We have identified that some payments made to 1911census.co.uk are showing on bank and credit card statements as “ScotlandsPeople” instead of “1911census.co.uk”. brightsolid operate ScotlandsPeople as well as findmypast.com and 1911census.co.uk and the wrong company name was applied to the 1911census.co.uk account because of an administrative error."

1911census.co.uk blog: "We’ve been scanning and transcribing the census in order of National Archives catalogue piece number. Broadly, this was originally dictated by the civil servants of the time who ordered the numbering system so that it started in London, moving outwards and upwards through the English counties, then the Welsh counties, and finally the islands and military establishments. This is the order in which the records will be released on 1911census.co.uk in 2009."

Archives Office of Tasmania : Name indexes

Archives Office of Tasmania : Name indexes: "The Archives Office has developed some on-line indexes to records which contain information about individuals. These indexes generally provide the name of the person in the specified record, some additional identifying information, and references to the record itself. These are most likely to be of interest to researchers undertaking family history but also in cases such as the ‘wills index’ which covers modern records as well, for lawyers and others interested in a particular piece of information or specific document."
