AncestorStuff.com

AncestorStuff.com :: Main :: MILITARY: Historical Register and Dictionary of the United States Army from Its Organization, September 29, 1789, to March 2, 1903. Two Volumes (Heitman): "a complete list of commissioned officers of the U.S. from the organization of the Army, September 29, 1789, to the year of the list's original publication in 1903, giving the officers' full names and showing their services as cadets and all services as officers or enlisted men, either in the regular or volunteer service.

The heart of the work, Part II, an alphabetical listing of the officers, runs to some 60,000 entries. Each entry contains a brief paragraph on the officer giving his state or country where born, state from which originally appointed, date of induction, rank, date of discharge, promotions, medals, battles participated in, and, in about a fifth of the entries, date of death after leaving the Army.

This monumental book is actually a lot more than a listing of the officer corps, as crucial as that is. Rather, it is a handbook on the men, events, and terminology of American military life during the years of its coverage. Hardcover, 1,069 + 626 pp., (1903) Reprint 1994"

University of Bergen Norway

Newbies to UK genealogy start here

GENUKI: Newbies Guide by Roy Stockdill:

" GENEALOGY in its strictest sense is the study of blood lines of descent from a particular ancestor or ancestors, with no attempt to examine or reconstruct the lives of those concerned. This is the fundamental building block, the foundations, leading on to.....

FAMILY HISTORY which covers a far wider spectrum and entails what might be called 'putting flesh on the bones'. Family history covers not just genealogical descents but the relating of your ancestors and their lives to the social and economic history of the times in which they lived.

Thus, anything at all which impinged on the lives of your ancestors can be said to be legitimate family history. This includes how they lived, the kind of houses they lived in, the clothes they wore, the food they ate, the jobs they did, how they brought up their children, where they went to church, the shops they shopped at, what kind of things they bought, the hours they worked, how they spent their leisure time, etc, etc, etc - and a million other things which all help to build up a practice and realistic picture of your ancestors' lives."

Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences of America: " (PIASA) was founded in 1942 during a time, as Pope John Paul II recalled “when our civilization was in crisis and terrible conflicts embraced the entire world; evil seemed to prevail against goodness and hatred was dominant over love; when Poland was condemned to extermination and filled with ruin and death”.

In the sixty three years that followed the Polish Institute went through many phases and changes in response to forces over which it had little or no control. But in spite of many difficulties and challenges it was able to achieve an enviable record that assures for it a secure and prominent place in the history of Polish America and the Polish diaspora."

Old Sad News from AOLt

Sad News: "Jenna has given me the sad news that AOL no longer will have a CL program, but I will NOT give up! I am visiting HOST RL Wohlford and his buddy Rhianan in Vermont this week and he has promised to take me to Gettysburg Pennsylvania before I move on to visit another friend.

My journal will be moving this week to Jenna's play name and I hope that you will all continue to invite me to your homes for a visit.

Since the HOST/LDRS names will no longer be around, please send your new screen name to Jenna at 'Jenna JLR' with the subject 'Happy Trails' so she knows it's for me. Also, please make sure you clicked the little button on this journal to be alerted for any new posts so that you know where to find me as we move my stuff. When the new journal becomes available, please make sure you've clicked that button there also. I'm very sad to see my friends lose their HOST/LDRS names,

but Jenna has a saying: 'We have a choice. We can either look forward to the sunrise or to the sunset.
Both are beautiful, but only one is followed by darkness.
' We choose to look for the sunrise and realize that things happen for a reason, and just maybe something better is on the horizon."

this in June 2005 was a part of continual downgrading of AOL membership services in time with their misguided commmercial shift from social networking to pure advertising and ISP services.

The old AOL communities continue of course and just migrated to other areas of the web.

The Western Australian Post Office Directories

The Western Australian Post Office Directories: "were published by H. Pierssené and then by H. Wise & Co. are an invaluable source of information for anyone who is doing family history or research on Western Australia during the period 1893-1949. The post office directories provide information by locality, individual surname, government service, and by trade or profession.

The different sections enable the enquirer to see at a glance the householders or businesses in any one town; the address of any householder or business in the State; and the businesses or individuals throughout Western Australia engaged in any trade or profession. The annual tables of contents provide links to each page. While it is not possible to do a text search on the directories, finding listings by localities, surnames, etc., is easy using the contents pages.

The complete set of Western Australia post office directories have been made available online with funding from the Friends of Battye Library Maude Sholl Bequest and the Bizzaca Family."
