Dennis Brain - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

Dennis Brain (May 17, 1921 – September 1, 1957) was a British virtuoso horn player and was largely credited for popularizing the horn as a solo classical instrument with the post-war British public. With the collaboration of Herbert von Karajan and the Philharmonia Orchestra, he produced what many still consider to be the definitive recordings of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's horn concerti."

Researching the family tree

Researching the family tree - Saugus, MA - Saugus Advertiser:
"7. Where did you go online to find information? I purchased Family Tree Maker back in 2005, but it was difficult to use and consequently I stopped my genealogy search.

Several months ago I purchased their 2009 version, which is a vast improvement. It imported all data from the 2005 files. It also automatically searches social security death records, Massachusetts Death record and Ancestry, Genealogy, My Family and Rootsweb databases.
If any hits are found, it gives you the ability to verify the data and import them into your files It also provides the ability to print many standard reports as well as providing the capability for the user to customize your own reports."

BETA Expert Connect

Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter: Ancestry.com Announces “Expert Connect”: "Clients never pay any fees to The Generations Network but the experts do pay a percentage of the fees to The Generations Network to cover credit card processing fees and other expenses.

There are two types of independent experts available through Expert Connect: researchers and professionals. Anyone who exhibits a passion for genealogy and a history of helping others with simple research tasks (e.g., local archive searches or photography) may sign up to become a researcher. Researchers can provide Expert Connect’s Record Pickup and Local Photo services. Professionals, on the other hand, must possess advanced qualifications such as industry certifications, education, membership in professional associations and relevant experience. Professionals are able to offer all five of the Expert Connect services.

Expert Connect is available to everyone right now, you do not need to be an Ancestry.com subscriber to use the service. More than 400 genealogy experts are awaiting your proposal.

All work performed is private and is strictly between the client and the researcher. Ancestry.com will never see the results and obviously will never publish the information found.

I suspect this is going to be a win-win situation for clients and experts alike. For clients, it solves the question of 'Where do I find an expert with the credentials that I need?' I was especially interested to learn that the service has a ratings system where clients will rate the services they receive. This is somewhat similar to eBay's ratings service. In the future, you might select a somewhat more expensive proposal in lieu of a cheaper one if the researcher's Expert Connect rating is higher than that of the low-cost bidder.

For genealogy experts, Expert Connect provides an easy and convenient method of finding new clients. Each expert can accept as much or as little work as he or she wants as each expert controls 'the throttle.'"

California Genealogical Society and Library blog: "If you've been to the Library you probably have admired our books on their nice new shelves (no more mismatched hand-me-downs), clearly marked and easy to find. But - are they perfectly arranged? No. Like cars on the freeway, the books bunch up in one place and are generously spaced in another. And books are occasionally re-shelved in the wrong place. With your help we can get every book in the right place.

Come to the library on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. for a review of the Library of Congress call number system and a chance to check your shelving skills. Then you can get to work putting the books in order."

Certificate in Genealogical Research at Boston University Center for Professional Education

Certificate in Genealogical Research at Boston University Center for Professional Education:

"The program is ideal for:

* Adults who seek to develop their genealogical skill set for personal or professional development
* Professionals wishing to augment their job qualifications
* Those with backgrounds in librarianship, archival management, teaching, historical research, law, medicine, biology, or other related fields"

Certificate in Genealogical Research

The Certificate in Genealogical Research consists of five modules, offered on Saturdays in seven-hour sessions.

1. Foundations of Genealogical Research (14 hours) Module 1 is an overview of general genealogical principles, goals, ethics, and end products. It covers the meaning of kinship, the role of genealogy in legal and historical research, and research principles needed for successful results. The module will introduce and establish the “Genealogical Proof Standard” as the basic framework for all research assignments to be covered in the BU program. As the foundation for the certificate program, it emphasizes three primary skill-building areas— problem-solving, research design, and report writing—and previews the higher-level modules.

2. Problem-Solving Techniques and Technology (21 hours) This module utilizes multiple examples to impart the skills necessary to design and follow the most direct path to a supportable conclusion. The use of technological tools, particularly the Internet, is placed in perspective and explored. Students create and execute a research plan, with particular attention to organizing, documenting, and presenting the findings in a report for a client.

3. Evidence Evaluation and Citation (21 hours) Module 3 presents the key elements necessary for determining the credibility and authenticity of evidence, while preparing students to recognize unreliable evidence and its origin. Once the evidence is evaluated, students learn complete citation formats and construction principles.

4. Forensic Genealogical Research (21 hours) Generally the most lucrative of the genealogical specialties, forensic research is done for the legal community, often at the direction of an attorney. Practical examples, famous cases, and in-class problem-solving will define the parameters of ethical forensic work. Techniques for opening cases, uncovering assets, collaborating with attorneys, and interviewing informants will be presented.

5. Genealogical Research Ethnic and Geographic Specialties (21 hours) Specific areas, timeframes, and cultural or ethnic origins may define the most effective research strategies. Overviews of approximately five different geographic locations or ethnicities (including Irish and Jewish) will be presented. Students will learn how to tailor research to unique problems.

The initial 98 class hour winter semester (14 weeks of 7 hour Saturdays
classes) and the accelerated summer program now running (14 weekdays of
7 class hours) indicate very significant trends.

IRELAND: IRISH RECORDS: Sources for Family and Local History (Ryan) - AncestorStuff.com: "Here's a 'lucky charm' that will help you eliminate the confusion and tie up some of the loose ends in your Irish research. Dr. James Ryan has been involved with Irish family records research for over 15 years. In Irish Records, this world-famous researcher has compiled the most comprehensive and easy-to-use resource for Irish historical records. It is a tool that no genealogist -- amateur or professional -- should be without

To conquer Irish research, one must first understand the nature of Irish historical records. In Ireland, during the late eighteenth and early to mid-nineteenth centuries, very few records were kept. Much of the populace lived as tenant farmers or laborers; activities that required few written records. Dr. Ryan explains this and more as you read about the history of Irish written records

More Importantly, Irish Records provides you with a comprehensive listing of all available sources for Irish written records. Organized by county, this list will help you in your search to find your ancestors' occupations, relatives and more! Use Dr. Ryan's specialized maps to help you zero in on the appropriate Irish town or parish. You can even use the book to help associate surnames with particular counties!

In this new edition, Dr. Ryan has added several new sources to his already extensive list. If you are searching for ancestors on the Emerald Isle, this is the source book for you!

KODACHROME Film - Discontinuance Notice: "Eastman Kodak Company announced on June 22, 2009 that it will discontinue sales of KODACHROME Color Film this year, concluding its 74-year run as a photography icon. Sales of KODACHROME, which became the world's first commercially successful color film in 1935, have declined dramatically in recent years as photographers turned to other films or digital capture. Today, KODACHROME represents just a fraction of one percent of Kodak's total sales of still-picture films."

Green Valley News & Sun - Columns > Columns > Genealogy: Privacy laws affect availability of death certificates

Green Valley News & Sun - Columns > Columns > Genealogy: Privacy laws affect availability of death certificates: "rizona death certificates issued in or prior to 1958 or are available at http://genealogy.az.gov/.

After 1958, the records are covered by privacy laws. Arizona is a “closed record” state, i.e., death records are not considered public for 50 years. Due to privacy laws, recent death certificates are generally provided only to next of kin, an attorney hired by the estate, the family, or a person with a legal interest, or a descendant with valid proof of descent.

Pima County death records are not even retained here, but are sent to Phoenix within 30 days of issuance.

For a number of reasons, among them violent death, contagious disease, unexplained death, absence of kin, or no physician in attendance, a death must be reported to the medical examiner. In those cases the body is sent to the Pima County Medical Examiner, 2825 E. District St., south of Ajo Way off Country Club in Tucson. Medical Examiner’s records are public, indexed and available to researchers."
