Famous former-homeowners in UK

Famous former-homeowners may add 10% - "Finding out someone famous used to live in your house can add ten per cent to its selling price, a study out today reveals.

Research by shows homeowners are increasingly looking to uncover the secrets of their properties, with 21 per cent of Brits researching their home's history. points to recent sales where a celebrity resident saw properties getting more buyer interest.

Property specialist Strutt & Parker point to the Old Manor, where the playwright Noel Coward once lived, 'resulting in numerous viewings and a successful sale', and the less well-known former home of Doctor Who scriptwriter Terry Nation, where interest has been 'extremely high'.

'Historical records such as censuses and the British phone books, both of which can now be found online, are a great place to start looking for the famous name you believe might be connected with your home and which may result in a blue plaque, increased value or both,' commented Simon Harper of"

I have been in NY and Chicago this week, and haven’t found the time to blog about this yet, but our wonderful sleepless team at World Vital Records has quietly opened up to the public.

We are hoping for a few thousand early users, experienced genealogists primarily, to set up personal profiles, tell us what cities they do research in (and where they live), create some ancestor pages, and most of all, give us lots of feedback about the site features and design."

Patricia Geary

Volunteer Spotlight » Patricia Geary: "Pat Geary has been a valued member of the RootsWeb community since she started using RootsWeb more than eight years ago.

When we started looking for nominations for exemplary volunteers, we heard Pat’s name first and often. She is always going the extra mile when answering questions on the Freepages-Help, Freepages-Advanced, and RootsWeb-Help mailing lists, as well as on the lists she admins.

Pat is an avid genealogist and Web designer, and she also does a bit of cross-stitching on the side. She has been doing genealogy “work” since she got her first computer in 1987, and it was only a few years later that she uploaded her first family website to the Internet."

Hansen and Jensen in Minnesota

new on - Minnesota Territorial and State Censuses, 1849-1905: "Minnesota inhabitants were first enumerated in the Michigan Territory 1820 census and the 1836 census of the Wisconsin Territory. A census of the Minnesota Territory was ordered in 1849, which included the name of head of household and number of males and females in that household.

The 1849 census includes St. Croix and 1850 includes Benton, Dakota, Itasca, Mankatah, Pembina, Ramsey, Wabashaw, Wahnahta, and Washington."

I often see Minnesota as a destination for scandinavian migrants in ships lists somade a couple of test searches:-

My search concerns Charles William Coates, born 1883 (July-September) in Sunderland, Durham, England.
He is the son of Samuel Marsh Coates and Mary Jane Preece also born in Sunderland.

Charles left home in his mid-teens for South Africa, possibly settled in Cape Town, Petrolia or Johannesburg. He and his wife Annie Jane Lazarus (nee Smart) married February 12, 1927 in Jeppestown, Johannesburg, South Africa. They had three sons: John, Jack and Harry.
If anyone has additional information on this family, please contact Joan.

Genea-Musings: "So I asked one of the volunteers what the status was of the access to the 'partner' sites.

He said that the San Diego FHC would be able to access the premium sites. He thought they were a week away from having access to the contents on Footnote, World Vital Records, Godfrey Memorial Library, and Kindred Konnections. He counseled patience!

He also said that when the additional data on FamilySearch Inc. becomes available that it would be offered to only LDS members initially. The stated reason was to assess bandwidth required before non-members can use it. He said that there were many records (the word 'billion' was mentioned) that were in the LDS system but not online yet anywhere. It sounds to me like they will use the LDS members as 'beta-testers' of the new system."
